HISTORY-INSPIRED CRAFT

CHAINSTITCH

The Kashmir Valley—a place where different cultures and ideas have come together along the Silk Route—has kept the art of chain stitch alive for over 700 years, with every pull of the yarn forming a chain that remains forever anchored to Kashmir's heritage. The chain stitch rug, locally known as Jalakdozi, has origins that date back more than 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest crafts.

These rugs evoke the nostalgia of a bygone era, with around 200,000 stitches in each one, all lovingly handmade by skilled Kashmiri artisans. These treasures, though influenced by other cultures, have been cherished and adapted to hold Kashmir’s culture and beauty, as if they were always a part of Kashmir’s own heritage.

Kashmir’s Historic Rugs For Your Modern Decor

ABOUT DIWAN-E-KHAS

A true celebration of the ancestry, culture, and art that define Kashmir. Diwan-i-Khas goes beyond just owning beautiful spreads; it’s about welcoming a Riwaaj with over 2,000 years of history—a tradition cherished by Kashmiri royals and families alike. Though influenced by cultures along the Silk Route, this ancient craft has been part of Kashmir’s heritage for more than 700 years. The love and dedication of Kashmir and its people are woven into every piece, making it uniquely their own.

Our collection echoes the historic aura of the Diwan-i-Khas, where history's most significant royal moments and celebrations took place. Each piece represents timeless art and beauty, finely handcrafted by Kashmiri artisans.

Our tribute to the ancient skills of Kashmiri artisans is materialized in two of the region’s most cherished crafts: Chain Stitch Rugs and Namdas. The intricate designs of antiquity and soul-stirring modern abstracts speak to the heart, evoking a deep sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. Each pull of the yarn connects us to Kashmir’s storied past, crafting a bridge to our cultural roots.

Every piece in this collection carries the centuries of love, tradition, and craftsmanship that have shaped the Kashmiri way of life. With Diwan-i-Khas, you are beautifying the legacy and hospitality of Kashmir into your home.
